Restricted Time Testing

Time-Based Testing: When Deadlines Override Perfection

Sprinters launching out of their blocks to demonstrate a short fast race

Sometimes an ERP project must launch on a fixed date — even when full test coverage is not feasible. In these cases, a time-based testing methodology is used. The team completes the maximum amount of testing possible before the deadline, with residual risks clearly documented and reviewed by leadership.

This approach includes:

  • Prioritising critical processes and high-risk scenarios
  • Tracking the frequency and severity of issues
  • Escalating outstanding risks to the Steering Group for decision-making

Time-based testing is not a shortcut — it is a structured, risk-managed approach used only when deadlines cannot move.

My role as ERP project manager is to ensure these trade-offs are transparent so that your leadership team makes fully informed decisions before approving go-live.
